Tournament History

Houston's oldest charitable golf event has a long and prestigious history. In 1967, prominent Houston business leader Lou Lewis approached Clyde Verheyden, founder and executive director of Good Samaritan Foundation, about staging a golf tournament to benefit the Foundation's nursing scholarship program.

The tournament's first three events were hosted by Houston's Westwood Country Club. In 1970, the tournament's home moved to River Oaks Country Club, and River Oaks has been its home course ever since. One of America's most elegant and exclusive country clubs, River Oaks allows access to only one non-member charitable golf event each year - the Good Samaritan tournament.

Tournament proceeds have provided scholarships to more than one thousand area nurses. In 2010, the goal for the event is for its net proceeds to provide scholarships to 100 students attending schools of nursing in the Houston/Gulf Coast area.
