While working at a local nursing home as a Certified Nursing Assistant, I discovered a great love of working with the elderly, especially those with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia problems. These people have the greatest need of patience and love, and I plan on working with these special clients. I enjoy small towns and the idea of caring for several generations of those families, year after year.

After 10 years as a corrections officer, I hope to work in the field of medicine, acting as a healer, easing the suffering of patients and families alike. My wife is a nurse, and I have seen the positive effect this work has had on her life and on mine as well.

My mother is a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. Observing the joy she has experienced has deepened my desire to care for those who deserve the best medical attention possible. My mother cannot contribute to my education because our family's financial stability ended last year with my father's death, following two bypass surgeries and a third heart attack. Without Good Samaritan funds I would not be able to continue in nursing school. My mother referred me to GSF for financial help because they gave her a scholarship for nursing school many years ago.

I have been a Registered Nurse for nineteen years, and now I want to do more. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, I will be able to work in a greatly underserved area: The poor of Houston. The patients with no money and no transportation need healthcare that is available in a clinic in their own neighborhood. My Good Samaritan Scholarship has been like the answer to a prayer.

I am grateful to the Good Samaritan Foundation for assisting me with my professional/academic endeavors in Nursing. I hope by pursuing a doctorate degree in Nursing I can aid the continued studies and research in the area of Women's Health Care with an enphasis on adolescent health.
