In the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan, a Samaritan traveler came upon an injured stranger. The man bandaged the stranger's wounds and placed him upon his own donkey. He then took the stranger to an inn and cared for him. The next day the Samaritan gave the innkeeper two silver coins [Greek: denarius, pl. denarii]. "Look after him," he said, "and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have."
The coins were an extension of the care and compassion the Samaritan gave to the stranger. Since 1951, more than 15,000 Texas nurses have been the beneficiaries of the same spirit of caring and generosity from Foundation donors.
